Gather: Are We Keeping our Promises?

Vermont law requires that our state budget addresses Vermonters’ right to health, housing, dignified work, education, food, social security, and a healthy environment. Although it’s a work of fiction, Gather by Kenneth Cadow shows us that all too often we fail to keep these promises to each other.

Join Stephanie Yu, Executive Director of Public Assets Institute, to explore why and how our state policies are failing families like Ian’s—the main character of the novel—and what tools the state has to more effectively keep these promises.

Steph came to Vermont and Public Assets Institute in 2015 and became the Executive Director in 2023. At Public Assets, she works on making Vermont’s unique education funding system, the state budget and family economic policies more equitable and responsive to the needs of Vermonters.
