The Humanities

Vermont Humanities was founded nearly 50 years ago, in 1974. Victor R. Swenson, the organization’s first Executive Director, later recalled, “When I was appointed, my first job was to open an office, so I started in January 1974 on New Year’s Day because we were in a hurry to get started. I moved a picnic table into the office, which was empty, and a folding chair and got to work.”

Do you have memories of Vermont Humanities and want to share them? That’s great! We’re collecting stories, photos, short videos, news articles, and more to share with the next generation of Vermonters as they engage with the humanities across our state.
