Comic Books and State House Map

Here in Vermont, freedom isn’t a free-for-all and unity doesn’t mean uniformity. From Town Meetings to cooperatives, and all the way up to the state house, Vermont’s approach to democracy is by turns unique, varied, and inspired.

We’re now offering two free resources to Vermont schools: the Freedom and Unity comic book about democracy in Vermont writ large, and a map-style exploration of Montpelier’s State House and the Capital City.

The Center for Cartoon Studies was commissioned by Vermont’s Secretary of State office and Vermont Humanities to create a graphic guide about the past, present, and promise of democracy and civics in our brave little state. Freedom and Unity is a 32-page introduction to democracy in Vermont by National Book Award Finalist Dan Nott. Good for Grades 6-12 and for adult civics education programs.

“Your State House” Map

Cartoonist Dan Nott, Vermont Book Award winner for his graphic novel Hidden Systems, has worked with Vermont Humanities, the Vermont Secretary of State’s office, and the Friends of the Vermont State House to create a map of Government and Democracy in Vermont’s Capital with a focus on engaging young people in democratic practice. Geared for students in grades 4-8.
