Comics are a powerful and often misunderstood storytelling language—one that is immersive, visually rich, and accessible across age groups and reading levels. From preschool classrooms to graduate seminars, comics have a unique ability to engage learners, including those who struggle with reading or communicate best through visual narratives.

In this lively, hands-on presentation, participants will be introduced to the fundamentals of cartooning as both an art form and a communication tool. Drawing on the past, present, and future of the medium, the session expands how we think about comics—not just as entertainment, but as a flexible language capable of conveying complex ideas with clarity and emotional impact. No prior drawing experience required!

Led by a graduate student, alum, or staff member from The Center for Cartoon Studies in White River Junction, Vermont—an internationally recognized school where aspiring cartoonists come from around the world to study—this workshop invites audiences to look closely, draw simply, and discover how comics create meaning.
