
Picturing Language: An Introduction to the Magic of Comics
In this lively, hands-on presentation, participants will be introduced to the fundamentals of cartooning as both an art form and a communication tool. Drawing on the past, present, and future of the medium, the session expands how we think about comics—not just as entertainment, but as a flexible language capable of conveying complex ideas with clarity and emotional impact. No prior drawing experience required!

James Sturm is a cartoonist and co-founder of the Center for Cartoon Studies in White River Junction. His notable works include Adventures in Cartooning, The Golem’s Mighty Swing, and Market Day. His work has appeared in scores of publications including The Chronicle of Higher Education, The Onion, The New York Times, Slate, and on the cover of The New Yorker. He is also the co-founder of the Seattle newspaper The Stranger.
