Our Reading & Discussion program is an easy, inexpensive way for libraries and other nonprofit organizations to host high-quality, facilitated book discussions in Vermont communities. Vermont Humanities provides the books, and trained scholars lead each session.
We are no longer accepting applications for Reading and Discussion sessions, due to cuts initiated by the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).
More about this program pause
- On April 1, 2025, DOGE terminated our NEH general operating grant, which accounts for 42% of our budget. This has major implications on our ability to do the work we had planned for 2025 and beyond.
- As a result, we have needed to eliminate or pause several programs and projects. We’re afraid that one of those programs is the public Reading and Discussion program.
- It pains us to pause – maybe indefinitely – this program that has meant so much to Vermont communities and to Vermont Humanities itself. But unfortunately we now need to make many difficult decisions in order to survive as an organization.
We are still accepting applications for facilitated discussions around our Vermont Reads choices.
