Mad Matt the Democrat

Image of Mad MattIn this talk, Vincent Feeney discusses Matthew Lyon— indentured servant, Green Mountain Boy, son-in-law to Thomas Chittenden, land speculator, entrepreneur, and one of the most colorful characters in Vermont’s early years.

Perhaps best remembered for his imprisonment under the Alien and Sedition Acts, and subsequent re-election while in jail, his life not only exemplified the promise of possibility in the then-new United States, but also reflected the political tensions of the times.
