When Spirit Moves Me: Music and Religion from Africa to the Americas
November 1, 2017
Robert Hull Fleming Museum
When enslaved Africans were brought to the New World, the only possessions they carried were intangible cultural expressions such as language, traditions, spiritual beliefs, dance, and music. This presentation by ethnomusicologist and music producer Jacob Edgar examines the powerful role music played in maintaining African religion in the Americas, and the ways in which the interaction between African song and spirit continues to make itself heard today.
Part of the Afro-Atlantic Sacred Arts exhibition, which highlights the connections between the West African Yoruba religion, Haitian Vodou, Cuban Santería, and Brazilian Candomblé. Presented by the Fleming Museum of Art.
