Walt Whitman was a great poetic innovator, the poet who best sums up what it is to be an American, and his Song of Myself is the most majestic poem written in our nation. And yet, for all this, UVM professor emeritus Huck Gutman finds Whitman to be wonderfully approachable.

About Huck Gutman

Huck Gutman is Emeritus Professor of English at the University of Vermont, where he taught American literature for close to fifty years and won both of the University’s major teaching awards. A former Chief of Staff to Sen. Bernie Sanders, he has also twice been a Fulbright Scholar, in Portugal and in India. The author of four books, he sends out a regular poetry letter to subscribers, which can be accessed from www.huckgutman.com.
