Transmedia: Storytelling as World Building
The Left Bank
Technology has inspired new ways of defining, crafting, and sharing stories. One of the more exciting developments is transmedia storytelling. This innovative approach involves building a story world of sorts—creating a deeper, broader, and interactive story experience. Interestingly enough, interactive story worlds are nothing new. The oral tale-telling tradition itself was a highly interactive experience. What is more, storytellers have long crafted stories with a heightened sense of narratives’ geographical contexts—J.R.R. Tolkien and William Faulkner, for example. Writer and Champlain College Professor Erik Esckilsen will explore the tradition of cosmoplastic—that is, world-building—storytelling from the past to the digital present.
