Thrones of the Gods and Altars of the Soul
November 15, 2017
Robert Hull Fleming Museum
The Afro-Atlantic religions believe that multiple beings live in the same human body. Indeed, priests of the Afro-Cuban Santería religion, also known as Regla de Ocha, bring to life the gods residing within the altars and within the devotees. Each year, on the anniversary of a Santería priest’s initiation, he or she erects an elaborate altar in celebration. In this talk, senior priest Daniel Rodríguez explains the hidden meaning and the spiritual power of the anniversary altar on display.
Part of the Afro-Atlantic Sacred Arts exhibition, which highlights the connections between the West African Yoruba religion, Haitian Vodou, Cuban Santería, and Brazilian Candomblé. Presented by the Fleming Museum of Art.
