The Underground Railroad is a familiar and popular chapter in American history. But much of what we “know” about how slaves escaped from slavery is often undocumented and sometimes just plain wrong. This illustrated lecture by former Rokeby Museum director Jane Williamson reviews the evolution of one underground railroad historic site—Rokeby Museum—to explore the legend and compare it with the history.

Part of a year-long professional development program for teachers focused on using history as an entry point to discuss race and racism in the classroom. Supported by a VHC grant.
