Food as Memory: Migrants, Food Traditions and Community Markets

Familiar foods call up memories of home, connect people to each other, and lend comfort to the uprooted. Explore this universal human experience through a walking tour in the Old North End of Burlington, a destination for migrant groups for almost 200 years.

The tour will highlight the push and pull of various migrations over time, how people carry on their food traditions while far from home, and how many newcomers feed their communities through local agriculture ventures and markets. Along the way, we will sample foods of various cultures, meet people who make a living through food, and hear their stories.

Led by Charlotte Barrett of Historic New England and Elise Guyette and Gail Rosenberg of the Burlington Edible History Tour.

Participants will travel on a shuttle bus during portions of the tour.
