How Does My Community Qualify?
To qualify for consideration, the community must have: • A nonprofit organization willing to act as the primary sponsor/coordinator – libraries, schools, historical societies, and social service organizations are good possibilities
• 1-2 representatives of that organization willing to act as project director(s)
• At least two other organizations to join the team and help develop and carry out the program. Involve as many partners as possible. The more partners, the greater your reach and investment will be.
Potential local partners might include: • Bookstores • Historical societies • Museums · Theatre groups / arts organizations • Local businesses • Afterschool/summer programs; teen centers • Folklife centers • Senior centers/assisted living facilities • Adult education and literacy services centers
Strong applications ideally will include at least one local school (if not more) and the local public and school libraries. No application will be denied outright for lack of participation from one of these entities.
To participate, the requesting organization must develop strong collaborations, plan creative and diverse humanities-based activities that support community-wide reading and discussion of the book and the themes it contains, and undertake vigorous publicity in the months leading up to the activities.
A Note on Dispensing Books: Communities should make a concerted effort to “recycle” the books awarded by VHC. When readers finish the book, have them sign their names on the inside cover, comment on the book, date their entry, and pass the book onto other readers.
When Do We Run Our Program? Events may be scheduled anytime from late February through December 2008. VHC suggests planning activities over a concentrated period of weeks or months.
What’s the Deadline? There are two deadlines for participation in the program: • February 1 for spring/summer participation • May 30 for summer/fall participation
Applications will be reviewed upon receipt. Awards will be made—and books and supporting materials sent—within two weeks of the application deadline. |
