Spelling Bee for Literacy

“Sharing Our Past — Shaping Our Future” Since 1974

Why is the Spelling Bee for Literacy Important?

The objective of the spelling be is to raise at least $10,000 for literacy programs in Chittenden County. Last year’s event exceeded this goal. Check out the Vermont Humanities Council’s literacy programs.

Literacy statistics in Chittenden County.

In Vermont's wealthiest county, there are startling literacy problems. More than 23,000 adults read below the eighth-grade level and more than 2,000 high school students drop out every four years. Between 20-40% of four-year olds are unprepared for the kindergarten learning environment. And 5% of families are below the poverty level (versus the state level of 6%).

Each year in Chittenden County, the Vermont Humanities Council

1. Reaches more than 1,000 adult new readers, at-risk students, corrections residents, low-income families, childcare providers, and teen parents

2. runs 80 or more literacy programs

3. distributes over 5,000 new books.
