Welcome to Reading and Discussion
People enjoy gathering together to share the pleasures of examining life through the medium of literature, hearing their neighbors’ reactions to the stories and ideas in the books, and voicing their own views. Our book discussions are stimulating, facilitated gatherings where diverse perspectives on shared readings can be expressed and examined.
The discussions are grouped in thematic series and each theme is comprised of up to six different books. When a library or other group sponsors a book discussion series, we supply copies of the books for participants to borrow and we send a skilled and knowledgeable discussion leader to facilitate the group. The scholar is prepared to share background information about the book, the author, and the historical context of the individual text, as well as to place the book in the overall theme of the series. The scholar helps draw everyone into the conversation and ensures a positive exchange of thoughts and opinions.
Reading and Discussion Catalogue Celebrating Civic Engagement for Thirty Years
VHC recently marked the 30th anniversary of its Reading and Discussion program with a new catalogue. In all, the Council is offering 64 Reading and Discussion series, 39 of which are new. In addition, communities can select from 37 single book discussion options.
The new catalog reflects even more sharply than in previous years VHC’s commitment to informed civic engagement. VHC seeks to foster conversations that are substantive, provocative, respectful, and supportive of richer, stronger, and more vibrant communities.
With the assistance of a grant from the Vermont Community Foundation, VHC offers six new discussion series that raise moral and civic issues that are at the very heart of community: Soldiering On: After Battle and Back Home; Outsiders: Those Who Fell Outside the Cultural Norms; The Rise of Nazism; The Legacy of the Civil War; Revenge; and The Seven Deadly Sins: A Sampler.
Enjoy!
