Seedfolks by Paul Fleischman

“You drop bread on the ground and birds come out of nowhere. Same with that garden. People just appeared, people you didn’t know were there.”
- Curtis, a community member in Seedfolks

Community and gardens will be the theme for Vermont Reads 2005 — the Vermont Humanities Council’s one-state, one-book community reading program. The 2005 pick is Seedfolks by Newbery-winner Paul Fleischman. Vermont Reads brings communities and people of all ages together to read a book and do activities centered around it. Seedfolks uses first-person vignettes and an urban garden to bring hope and community to a bleak Cleveland neighborhood.

There was a phenomenal response to Vermont Reads Seedfolks—more than 300 activities took place in 59 communities. It was a new high point for Vermont Reads.

Libraries, schools, senior centers, and other organizations hosted staged readings, intergenerational discussions, community gardens, oral history gatherings, writing and art projects, read-a-thons, harvest luncheons and dinners, community quilting parties, and storytelling. Several schools made Seedfolks required reading for the entire school.

In September author Paul Fleischman spent two days visiting schools, public libraries, and community gardens. His visit culminated with a public talk at Burlington High School.

“Vermont Reads is bringing communities together through the experience of sharing a book that cuts across cultural and generational differences,” noted Jim Flint, executive director of Friends of Burlington Gardens. “Seedfolks helps people think about their assumptions of how others live and respond to life’s challenges. Seedfolks reminds us that we don’t know how life or a garden will turn out, but that by working together, understanding can grow.”

Vermont Public Radio ran a Vermont Reads feature broadcast.
